In this unit students will explore features of style and adopt unfamiliar styles in their writing in order to begin to develop their own voice; they will also examine the themes of social conformity versus nonconformity and the meaning of adulthood.
The main text is Catcher in the Rye by J. D. Salinger. The unit is designed for tenth- and eleventh-grade English students. The second lesson, however, is designed for emerging readers and thus might also be more appropriate for younger students. Its focus is on metacognitive reading strategies, particularly visualizing a scene.
The unit includes four detailed lesson plans as well as writing assessments and protocols (handouts) for students to conduct small-group activities.
