First step to finding the Area of Regular Polygon is to find the length of the apothem.
Matching Activity: Finding the Length of the Apothem
This is a 3-way matching activity. Students use trig or special right triangles to find the measure of the apothem. Students then match the figure to the correct trig function and to the correct length (either as an exact value or an approximation).
This is a great beginning activity to use before students find the area of a regular polygon. I found that students have trouble finding the area of regular polygons because they cannot find the apothem or are not sure where to start. This activity gives students plenty of practice with apothems.
The answers are listed in two formats: rounded to hundredth place and exact answers. This allows the activity to be used for students from remediation all the way to AP students.
Alternate Uses of Activity:
Interactive Bulletin Board: Place magnets on the back of the cards. Then you can leave them on your blackboard for early finishers to work on.
Teach the class activity: Give each student (or group of students) one card. They work the problem. Then they teach the class how to work their card. This activity not only works on students’ math skills but also on their communication skills.
