Objective: Finding the Area of Regular Polygons using the formula A= 1/2 aP or 1/2 asn. Student will need to use trigonometry or special right triangles to find the apothem or the side length on some problems.
This activity also gets students up and about. Place the 10 cards on the wall around your room. Students pick any card to begin with. They should find the area of the figure. Students then look around the room for a card that matches their answer. Then they work the next problem. They should continue until they return to the card they started with.
Included are 2 versions of this activity.
- One with 10 cards for use as a walk-around activity.
- A shorter version with only 5 cards great for table work, bell work or use as a review.
To help with grading, I have included student response sheets (in different formats). I like my students to draw a picture when working problems, so I have included small basic pictures of the polygons for students to glue to their answer sheet. The diagram do not include measurements to allow student to label the pictures. I also have my student highlight the important information: apothem and side length.
