This product includes twenty cards and an accompanying graphic organizer. These cards were designed to give students practice using context clues to determine the meaning of unknown words. Each card has a short passage with an underlined word. Students use the graphic organizer to analyze the word, its context and ultimately decide the meaning of the unknown word.
The graphic organizer has students record the unknown word and infer its meaning. Students back up their inference by choosing what type of context clue they used (in-sentence definition, synonym, antonym, example or other) and listing words that helped them determine the meaning of the unknown word.
These cards can easily be used in group or partner work. The cards are color-coded for distribution ease and conserved printing. Using these cards in a small group is a great way to help struggling students use context clues. I hope you and your students find this product useful!
Note: Some of the mini-passages are included in one of my other products 'Mini-Passages with Character Inferences'. I use both sets of cards, and because the questions are different the students have to use a different set of skills to answer them. I also use them with different groups of kids. Both sets have been a valuable tool for me, but if you are wanting only new stories you might want to stick with one or the other.
