This is an in-depth activity on author’s purpose what can be used with any type of reading material. The students are asked questions under each of the possible author’s purpose – to persuade, inform, and to entertain about what they are reading. Answering all the questions will help them find not only the author’s purpose but why the other choices are not the author’s purpose. After they answer the questions they will fill out a graphic organizer with evidence from what they are reading that supports the author’s purpose. Then they will use the graphic organizer to write a few sentences/ paragraph about what the author’s purpose is and why. This activity helps students practice writing in complete sentences / paragraph and find and under author’s purpose. This activity could be done in groups or adapted for different grade levels.
