Learning Numbers and Developing Fine Motor Skills

Pinching Q–tips helps develop the same muscles used in a pencil grip and is a great way to strengthen those little hands. These sheets have been created to help develop student fine motor skills and introduce numbers and numeral formation.

Tips are included to add variety and fun to these sheets. If you don't want to use paint- if if you just want to mix things up, my students have also enjoyed using "Do A Dot" markers, stickers and even tweezers with small objects to complete these sheets- the only limit is your imagination.

I like to use these sheets at the beginning of the year with my Kindergarteners it is one of their first math centers. They are introduced to numbers, learn how to manage materials, and build their fine motor skills in an engaging activity through which all can feel successful. Pre-K could use these year- round.

This is a great activity to prepare students for paper and pencil handwriting tasks. Stronger fingers help improve pencil grasp. Students practice proper strokes from the beginning in a tactile way that becomes more embedded in the brain.
