PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Pencil Power Deluxe! Perfect for RTI! Fine motor centers to teach pencil grasp and control! Designed by an occupational therapist, Jan McCleskey, MA, OTR. This file has printable handouts for how to hold a pencil, as well as a therapeutic adaptation for working with funky grasp patterns. Jan has a freebie on TPT entitled: How to Hold a Pencil from an Occupational Therapists Perspective. With these FUN center time activities, and the article, and teacher or therapist should be able to print out activities and labs to facilitate dynamic control of a pencil. The activities in this kit are appropriate for age 4 - 9.

The tracing files are specifically designed to work towards a manipulative, dynamic grasp. These fine motor labs are essential for any preschool, Kindergarten or 1st grade classroom. Occupational therapists can use this product to work on fine motor skills in therapy. OT's can also recommend this file for teachers to purchase, to work on fine motor skills for an entire class. Very comprehensive.
If you like this product, a product that works very well in combination, is the Coloring Power Deluxe files by Jan McCleskey, MA, OTR. With both of these files, a teacher should be able to work towards improving grasp patterns on a pencil, and dynamic control. Students should then generalize these skills to writing. Don't settle for static, fatiguing grasp patterns in your classroom! All the funky grasp patterns that are so predominate in classrooms, are a relatively new phenomena that developed when students began early tool use and the preschool and Kindergarten curriculum became more challenging.
Pencil control may be one of the most important readiness skills that is very much overlooked! Add these centers to your classroom - this is a comprehensive file, that progresses in skill. Most of all, as a teacher - you will have important handouts to use with your children and to send home to parents, which will teach how to hold a pencil correctly. Jan McCleskey, MA, OTR owns The Handwriting Clinic, in Plano, Texas - and has developed this program through years of experience in working with grasp development. I hope you will find this to be an extremely fun and useful center time activity. Please encourage a tripod grasp, and place the picture of the correct grasp on a pencil, in every center time lab along with the printable activities. This will remind your students to use their correct grasp. The TIP grip protocol is also included in this file, for students who have challenging grasp patterns. Take a picture of each child's grasp pattern and the beginning, and then 2 months later after they work through these labs (with verbal encouragement and reminders!). Then take a picture after grasp patterns has been emphasized in your classroom! Feel empowered to work on this challenging skill - you CAN work on pencil grip in your classroom! Jan also has a multitude of FUN fine motor center time activities on TPT. Most go with core-curriculum objectives!
