The MAIN PRODUCT IS A COMPLETE PRESENTATION ON FINGERPRINT LAW. This minimally includes:
Brandon Mayfield is an American. His fingerprint was identified as that of the Madrid train bomber by the FBI. Spain had some other people with promising fingerprints but the FBI was convinced they’d found their man. This proved to be such a disaster for the FBI that in and of itself Mayfield’s case came to stand against the very idea that fingerprints are unique, a linchpin for law enforcement.
The UK had a fingerprint case similar to the Mayfield one. Scot policewoman Shirley McKie was wrongfully accused like Mayfield. The accusation was that she had been at a murder scene when she had not been.
in this second decade of the twenty first century, things are moving further forward so as to not make the mistakes of the Mayfield and McKie cases again.
"Fingerprint evidence should be recognized as opinion evidence and not fact”. This is the new tenet which law enforcement dreads hearing.
The essential problem is that fingerprint analysis is an artful technique that depends on a human interpreter’s subjective evaluation. So it is an art coupled with a science, always a dangerous combination.
