Fire fighter, fire safety and community helpers units are perfect times to work on critical language skills: identifying and stating object functions, using specific vocabulary (not "right there") and location concepts, answering wh questions and using prepositional phrases.
You will receive 38 pages, all color. There are three primary activities to address the above goals. There is a set of 14 vocabulary pictures to use to introduce vocabulary related to firefighters and fire safety. Second, the students are shown a friendly firefighter who needs the help of your students!! Using a speech bubble, they tell the student their situation and ask them what type of tool or item they should use and the student chooses from 3 pictures and can earn a firefighter badge! This can be a large group, small group or individual activity.
The third activity requires students to work together to put out a fire. One puts the "fire" on a picture and then uses a prepositional phrase and precise location word to tell the firefighters (with the pretend hose) where the fire is located. The pictures include enough white space around each picture so that you can work on a variety of location concepts, including on/off, under, above/below, top/bottom, next to, front/back or behind. It can also be used as a barrier activity to promote specific language. This works nicely in a center and you can include a component of dramatic play by adding props such as fire hats and old garden hoses. It can also be a small group or individual therapy session activity.
The activities were designed for 3-5 year olds to be used in an early intervention setting, child-care setting, 4k center or therapy setting. Please check out the preview pages to see screenshots of all the activities and thanks for stopping by!!
