I created this resource to use with my fourth graders after reading Fireboat to them. I wanted them to have something that involved writing but not just answering comprehension questions. I also wanted it to be something that they could get into and be creative with. And so, this idea was born. I decided to have the students write a newspaper article describing the importance of the John J. Harvey. Students will write about the events of 9/11, how the John J. Harvey was used, and why it was important. They will work on organization of their writing piece by following the graphic organizer that is included.
I will complete this activity WITH my students (the graphic organizer portion) because we start school just a week before 9/11, but with older/more advanced students and/or students who have been 'back at it' a bit longer, it could be done less guided and more independently.
