2nd grade Social Studies Unit:
Firefighters and Fire Safety
Learning about our Community
7 thirty minute sessions
This unit teaches all about firefighting and fire safety. I use a reading comprehension strategy in the beginning of the unit to increase understanding and engagement with the lesson and subject. Throughout the unit, I use books as well as engaging activities to immerse the students in their learning. The lessons are written so that they are simple, yet clear. They have just the right amount of detail so they are easy to understand but you do not have to read forever. They are short enough that you could print them out and use them as an (easy) reference.
I teach this unit once a year to my second graders. We do two lessons a week for 3 1/2 weeks. I also do a 6 lesson unit on community and I do a 6 lesson unit on dental health. All three go well together and fit the standards for second grade.
