First Day Jitters Mentor Lesson Plans

Monday:
Read the story , First Day Jitters by: Julie Danneberg or you can watch it online. Link is provided in download.

Read and glue the mentor sentence on chart paper. Count how many words are in the first sentence. Discuss if the sentence is telling or asking something. Then count how many words are in the second sentence. Tell what type of ending punctuation is used. Review and glue the color code chart for the parts of speech onto the chart. Model how to find the parts of speech by underlining them with the coordinating colors. Then students should use the printable handout and underline the parts of speech with specific colors from the chart just as you modeled. Lastly, discuss ways to improve the sentence and then re-write it below mentor sentence with an improvement.

Tuesday: Compound Words Mini Lesson
Discuss what compound words are. Use the mini lesson chart to help you. Then have students complete the compound word art project. Lastly, an word sort assessment has been provided for you as well.

Wednesday: Quotation Mini Lesson: Show the Writing Conventions Code Sheet. Then find the quotation marks; code them with purple. Discuss how to use quotations correctly. Use a sentence strip or printable handout and insert the quotation marks in the correct place in purple or you can even use macaroni pasta instead for a 3D effect. Then practice creating dialogue between Mrs. Sarah Jane Hartwell and a new character you will create.

Thursday: Verbs Mini Lesson
Discuss what verbs are. Use the mini lesson chart to review the words on the page that are found in the story.
Then have students use the printable with sticky notes to choose three verbs from the mini lesson chart. Students should look up these words, define them, and draw a picture of the word on each sticky note. These can be cut out and glued into an interactive notebook if you have those.

Friday: Comprehension and Creativity!
Take the comprehension test either on paper provided or on Accelerated Reader’s website.
Lastly, complete the writing and drawing activity.
