It is extremely important to set the tone of class on the first day. I love teaching, and I am a very laid back kind of person, but I don’t want students knowing that on the first day! Thus, I like to start off with something engaging, informative, and fun to set the tone for the rest of the semester. Instead of students doing a get-to-know-you puzzle or worksheet, I take advantage of this day when even the most challenging students are on their best behavior. I teach! It is a surprise to them because they were expecting to hear a bunch of rules and do no work. Something I have learned over the years: NEVER go over rules on the first day. Every other teacher in your school has already done that, so the students won’t remember what you said anyway when they switch classes. Plus, it’s incredibly boring. Don’t waste a great first day on class rules and acquaintance puzzles! They will get to know you and each other over the course of the semester. I like to save the class rules and procedures for a day when things have settled down a bit.
Enjoy this free lesson! Of course, you can use it any day of the year - not just on the first day.
