Want engaged, happy students on the first day instead of glazed expressions as you read the syllabus out loud? (We've all been there!)
This fun first-week-of school activity is sure to be a hit for Harry Potter fans. Inspired by the famous Hogwarts sorting hat, the activity is divided into two parts. In the first, students participate in a full class activity in which they sort themselves into various places in the room based on experiences they have had and personality traits they share. Then, they proceed to the second part, in which they create a Hogwarts-style house for their own school to which they would wish to belong.
“Go to the ______, if _______” : This handout details the first activity, in which the teacher reads a variety of statements and students sort themselves around the room accordingly.
“The House of ___________” : This handout gives students a chance to use their imaginations and show you some important things about themselves on the first day. It asks them to brainstorm a Hogwarts-style house that would be perfect for them, hopefully revealing the types of traits and experiences that they value.
