This first day of school writing activity helps students making connections uses the book, "First Day Jitters," by Julie Danneberg to help students learn to make connections (text to self) and helps clear up any "first day jitters." The student is able to write a connection or a few short sentences on the paper and can include an illustration. This is a tried and true lesson that I do each year in the early grades. It is recommended to read aloud the story (or find an online version) or the teacher may share some of his/her own jitters and scaffold the activity for students to complete on their own. As a follow on activity, I always have the students share their writing ideas with the class.
