Engage your students in this quick and insightful get-to-know-you activity on the first day. Using controversial current and historical issue statements (ex. The United States should require all citizens to serve in the military), students travel around the room finding peers who agree with the provided statements and having them sign next to the statement. This is a great activity for students to meet their fellow classmates and begin to engage in constructive dialogue about social studies.
Teachers can use the statements to generate initial discussion in the classroom about issues related to the curriculum.
