The first day of school is vital! Teach your students procedures while doing a fun lab on the first day. This measurement lab begins the class as students put themselves into alphabetical order, allowing them to begin on the first day building classroom community. (I always start the year with an alphabetical seating chart). After handing out the syllabus, discussed later in the week, we immediately start lab! Students dive into measurement as they evaluate the relationship between volume and mass. I have a set of numbered blocks of wood at the front table for the groups to work with.
Students use metric rulers and calculate volume of their cube of wood. Then, on day 2, students graph their data to discover density!
