Each task card includes a passage from a famous work of literature or poem dealing with school. Students are then instructed to identify the element of figurative language and explain its purpose in the given passage. A few prompts ask students to share their experiences and opinions about school based the passage.
The task cards include elements of figurative language such as simile, metaphor, personification, hyperbole, alliteration, and assonance. Passages come from texts such as The Catcher in the Rye, Speak, The True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, Jane Eyre, and the Harry Potter series, with poetry by Billy Collins, Shakespeare, and Langston Hughes.
A recording sheet and an answer key are included.
