This is the perfect way to begin a course in 5th-8th grade. It was designed for a Language Arts classroom but could be adapted for other subject areas. The resource is an 8 slide powerpoint and 4 page set of inspirational quotes. The lesson would take between 40-60mins to complete. The idea is to inspire students on the very first day to be the very best they can be. The powerpoint contains teacher notes where needed. The lesson begins by getting students to focus on the power of words - having them think about the words they use daily, and the words they will encounter through reading and writing and thinking. The lesson progresses with a motivational youtube video that encourages students to excel with powerful images - slides cover the the difference between people who achieve their dreams and those that don't. There is a strong visual on 'stepping outside the comfort zone' - students also do a walk and share activity using a class set of motivational quotes. The lesson has a writing component ( a letter to their future at the end of the school year based on their internal promises.) There are opportunities for the teacher to collect some powerful photo poses of success and a possible song and or exit card to close. It took my all summer to come up with a truly inspiring way of starting the first day. You get all my 'creative genius' :-) for just a few $$$. If you are a 5th grade or Middle School Language Art teacher - you will not find a more perfect message to start the school year. Almost no prep. - just cut out a yellow frame to make a comfort zone and print the quote cards and hide in students desks. Easily adaptable to Social Studies or as a great opening lesson for an Advisory course or Home base activity. No risk here - money well spent for a session that will stick with your students all year. At the end of the year the lesson can be revisited to go full circle with the reading of the letters.
