Regardless of grade level or content area, Newcomer English Language learners (ELLs) need to be immediately taught many different things, including how to use greetings. Use this illustrated activity guide with your newcomer English language learners (ELL, ESL, ELD) on their first day of school.

The activity guide includes vocabulary, sample greetings, sample responses, sample conversations, and spaces to practice.

It provides students with ample opportunities to practice English in the four domains.

LISTENING: Partner students with peers so they can listen to the sounds of the different words and expressions.

SPEAKING: Have students practice greetings vocabulary, moving to phrases and full conversations.

READING: Students can read aloud to practice their pronunciation. As they grow more comfortable with the language, you can ask questions such as: why would you greet someone using “Mr./Mrs.”?

WRITING: At the end of the activity guide, students can use the vocabulary they learned to create greetings conversations. Encourage them to write one where they are greeting a teacher, the principal a friend, or a family member.

Once completed, you can use the completed activity guide to give the student a participation/homework/other grade.
