Product Description

This FUN and challenging back to school NGSS and STEM activity is the PERFECT way to get your students excited about science and engineering and to get know your students during the first week (MS-ETS1). Students are presented with the task of designing and creating a NAME TAG that follows specific criteria in one class period! (Ex: using only specific materials, has to fit in your binder, has one movable part, etc.) They complete the reflection for homework and share their name tags the following day to get to know one another better and to further reflect on their design. Students fold their name tags, store them in their binder, and use them every day for the first few weeks to get to know each other better!

Product includes:

  • Student Directions Page (hand write the materials you will be using on the lines)
  • Student Reflection on the design process
  • “For the Teacher” Notes

This activity is an introduction to the Next Generation Science Standards on Engineering Design:

MS-ETS1-1. Define the criteria and constraints of a design problem with sufficient precision to ensure a successful solution, taking into account relevant scientific principles and potential impacts on people and the natural environment that may limit possible solutions.

MS-ETS1-2. Evaluate competing design solutions using a systematic process to determine how well they meet the criteria and constraints of the problem.

MS-ETS1-3. Analyze data from tests to determine similarities and differences among several design solutions to identify the best characteristics of each that can be combined into a new solution to better meet the criteria for success.

MS-ETS1-4. Develop a model to generate data for iterative testing and modification of a proposed object, tool, or process such that an optimal design can be achieved.
