This is an excellent beginning of the year activity to get students thinking about having a successful year in any class. Students write their own recipes for a successful year. Students are challenged to think about “ingredients” to being successful in your class.
My students enjoy creating these recipes the second day of school. I post them in the classroom as a reminder to the students of the expectations they set for themselves. I would suggest doing a rough draft on a sheet of notebook paper. I would also suggest doing a whole-class discussion brainstorming good “ingredients” to a successful year. This activity also gives teachers a first glance at their students’ writing abilities when they write the instructions for the recipe.
