• Making ten to add eight
• Making ten to add nine
• Doubles plus one
• Doubles plus two
Students practice addition strategies by matching a color-coded card (with an addition fact on it) to an addition fact on a work mat. For example, the work mat may have 9+5; if using the “making ten to add nine” strategy, students would place the 10+4 fact card on the work mat next to the 9+5 fact.
I created these activities to give my students more practice with these strategies. I only put these out as independent centers after thoroughly teaching these strategies. If not, students will just match up the sums instead of using the strategies to add. These can also be used in a teacher-led, small-group setting where the teacher can observe the students, and ask students to explain how they use the strategies.
