First Grade Benchmark Word Study / Spelling Word Lists, Units 1 – 10

Do you ever wonder why we even teach spelling when so many students can’t apply learned spelling concepts and words in their writing? Is it an effective use of time to have students memorize spelling words? Imagine your students internalizing spelling concepts you’ve taught, and actually apply concepts, words, and related words correctly in their writings instead of merely memorizing a list of words for a weekly test and forgetting them! If this sounds like just what you’re looking for, this product is for you and your students!

The purpose of word study is vital. First, students develop a general knowledge of English spelling. Second, they learn how to examine words through active exploration using a hands-on, manipulative approach. Making time for word work is essential because it helps patterns and words to move into long-term memory. Having students use a word study Notebook builds conceptual understanding. Students glue a word list into a composition book. Throughout the week they add words that follow the weekly spelling concept and explain their understanding so you can quickly assess for misconceptions.

It is recommended that students also participate in the use of Word Sorts. Word Sorts is an approach to spelling instruction that moves away from a focus on memorization and is proven to increase reading fluency. Additionally, providing spelling aligned dictation assessment is an essential link between instruction in spelling and mechanics and application in real writing.
