First Grade Guided Reading Assessment Awards for Individual Data Walls
Reward each student with a The Little Engine That Could train car every time he/she moves up a reading level. Children can display these train cars at home, and parents can watch their personal data wall at home, celebrating as their train is getting longer through reading achievement! It's a great motivator for students, and parents become aware of their child's progress. The original 5x7 cards can be duplicated on various colored paper or card stock. The set includes the engine card for the beginning of the year, train car, and the caboose for the end of the year. For each student you will need to duplicate one engine card, one caboose, and several train cars, depending on how many reading levels they move up. At the beginning of the year, duplicate all the cards at once so teacher management was a snap!
The read aloud lesson is a modified lesson from Linda Hoyt, to introduce the theme of perseverance with The Little Engine That Could. The particular book was cited as in Robert Marzano's Reinforcing Effort and Recognizing Achievement chapter of his Nine Instructional Strategies.
As a bonus for extra effort, award Child Engineer Hats periodically to deserving students, (available www.orientaltrading.com about $1.00 each) for them to wear while reading at home. This was a 'hit' and your PTO may sponsor them for you.
