What are other teachers saying about this resource?
☝ This standards-based unit includes practice reasoning with shapes and their attributes. Students must be able to distinguish between defining attributes (number of side, corners, etc.) and non-defining attributes (color, size and orientation). Students must also be able to draw and compose shapes with defining attributes. Defining named shapes based on attributes, comparing shapes with similar/different attributes, writing about observations about shapes, and This is how we encourage higher-order thinking in our young students.
✨ Mega Math Practice 1.G.1 gives your students a lot of practice understanding the concept of identifying the attributes of shapes and reasoning with those attributes.
✨ Mega Math Practice can be used as independent practice for skills already taught, homework, or as a class starter. These pages are NOT meant to be used until students need practice with skills that they have already been taught. They should also not take the place of using actual manipulatives. The use of manipulatives is also helpful WHILE using these practice pages. Students also need many opportunities to work with the measurement of length in a variety of situations.
First Grade Measurement and Data Activities focus on the first-grade standard:
⭐Measurement and Data 1.G.1:
➤ Distinguish between defining attributes (e.g., triangles are closed and three-sided) versus non-defining attributes (e.g., color, orientation, overall size); build and draw shapes to possess defining attributes.
☝ This unit includes practice understanding and defining shapes based on observing their attributes. Young mathematicians not only need to learn how to define, but how to create shapes based on their attributes. Students should not just be able to identify shapes but to define their attributes and create them. I use these pages during our “written math practice” rotation during math workshop/guided math time. These pages can also be used for early finishers or homework during the time that you work with individuals and small groups. There are more MEGA MATH PRACTICE units in my store aligned with the Common Core State Standards.
