This pack contains all of our math journal prompts combined into one set! This set contains 210 math journal questions to use with your first grade students throughout the school year. Each monthly section has a title page and is followed by a page that includes all questions listed for that month. Below is a listing of each month and the math focus questions for that specific month, you can download the preview as well to view the math focus for each month.
As the months progress, problems become more challenging.
September: addition, shapes and numbers.
October: Addition, shapes and patterns.
November: Addition (2 & 3 addends) and beginning subtraction.
December: Addition (2 & 3 addends with sums to 20 and adding while counting by 10’s), subtraction, greater than/less than, place value (10’s & 1’s), and ordering numbers.
January: Subtraction (using the words fewer & more/less than), understanding the meaning of the equal sign, beginning fact families, place value (1’s, 10’s & 100’s).
February: Subtraction word problems (with minuends up to 20) and place value (recognizing numbers in the 1’s, 10’s, & 100’s place).
March: Place value (comparing numbers using less than, greater than, etc…) Money addition story problems (pennies, nickels & dimes), Adding a single digit to a double digit number, Adding and Subtracting groups of tens.
April: Addition & subtraction word problems (double digit number + or – a single digit number), shape characteristics (riddles),
addition & subtraction word problems
(double digit number + or – 10), and number sense (riddles).
May: Telling time to the hour and half-hour, measurement, addition and subtraction of 2-digit numbers with groups of 10.
June/July: Adding/subtracting single digits, adding/subtracting a single digit to/from a double digit number, comparing sums and differences, place value (grouping 1’s into 10’s), time (counting up one hour/half hour), and shape fractions with halves and fourths.
