Welcome to Spring Frog Math - First Grade Using a Hundred Chart. This spring edition of Frog Math gives students additional practice in using a hundred chart. It includes one more, one less, ten more, ten less, and finding the missing number. Also included are Hundred charts to practice skip counting by 2, 3, 5, and 10. In addition there is practice in using a hundred chart to add and subtract any number by tens. The unit allows students rigorous practice in the skills that are required for mastery of the standards. Learning the spatial representation of numbers and adding and subtracting using a hundred chart is critical to the development of first grade number sense and place value. I have used these practice pages over and over in centers and for independent practice. This skill is aligned with the Common Core (1.NBT.4, 1.NBT.5, 1.NBT.6) and with the TEKS (1.5C)

Common Core Alignment:
Number and Operations in Base Ten 1.NBT
Use place value understanding and properties of operations to add and subtract.
**Add within 100, including adding a two-digit number and a one-digit number, and adding a two-digit number and a multiple of 10, using concrete models or drawings and strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction; relate the strategy to a written method and explain the reasoning used. Understand that in adding two-digit numbers, one adds tens and tens, ones and ones; and sometimes it is necessary to compose a ten. (1.NBT.4)
**Given a two-digit number, mentally find 10 more or 10 less than the number, without having to count; explain the reasoning used. (1.NBT.5)
**Subtract multiples of 10 in the range 10-90 from multiples of 10 in the range 10-90 (positive or zero differences), using concrete models or drawings and strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction; relate the strategy to a written method and explain the reasoning used. (1.NBT.6)

The unit includes guided and independent practice. For each emphasis, there are at least two colorful guided practice/re-teaching pages designed for projection or for small group intervention. Also included are several printer-friendly (less graphics) pages for independent practice, to use for small group work or centers. Use part or all of this resource for your spring review of using a hundred chart. The pages print equally well in black and white and in color.

I use ‘guided math’ in my classroom. I begin my teaching time block teaching/spiraling math concepts as a whole group, but most of my math is devoted to guided practice in small groups followed by independent or small group practice, centers and intervention. I begin my math time every day with a page from my popular Number of the Day series. You may find more math in this “printable” format in my store.

I hope that you and your kids enjoy this fun resource. Check back soon. I continue to add more units daily!
