Counting Spots - First Grade Fluency to TEN - Part 1

First Graders need to have computational fluency to 10... what does that REALLY look like?? Are they fluent because they can complete a worksheet??? No, not entirely! Fluency means MENTAL MATH and flexibility in solving problems.

These questions move the child from needing to see and count dots/objects (concrete learning), to being able to quickly identify the number they see and tell about the combination. This stage develops the mental visualization that students need in order to become fluent with number combinations and move into mental math strategies. Using color and structure, children develop flexible strategies for solving mental math problems. This is the Second step on our {FREEBIE} 5-step Computational Fluency Chart
