Many teachers are moving to the centers-based approach to teaching the EngageNY math modules.
This set of six printable workmats provides your first graders with practice in decomposing sets of 7, 8 and 9 objects in more than one way and to record each decomposition (Foundational standard K.OA.3). Common classroom materials are used (small pieces of pipe cleaners for worms, fish crackers for fish and any round object for eggs and bubblegum. (Any objects can be used, really). Children may work with a partner or on their own to use the manipulatives and record their work on the workmats.
Print in color and slide in sheet protectors to use as a math center. Use one version of a number to be decomposed to model and practice with it displayed on your smartboard, then place the other set at centers or print one for each student.
