This product contains all of the application problems from EngageNY module 6 for grade 1. That’s 24 problems in all (lessons 1, 2, 25, 26, 27, and 30 don’t have application problems). All problems remind students to read, draw, and write (RDW). Check boxes are included at the top. There is space to create the drawing and show all work, and lines are included to write a sentence that connects the answer back to the context of the problem.
The second Common Core Standard for mathematical practice says that students should “Reason abstractly and quantitatively.” To practice this every time, a student should:
• Read the problem through once, and then refer, if necessary, back to the word problem to reestablish meaning (The “Read” in RDW)
• Draw a bar model, number bond, number line, array, or area model to solve a problem and then reasons directly off the model itself to answer the question. (The “Draw” in RDW)
Write an equation or number sentence to express the thinking of his solution. Additionally, the student should write a sentence to connect the solution back to the context of the problem. For example, He sold 7 apples yesterday. (The “Write” in RDW)
PLEASE NOTE: This file cannot be updated. It does not contain any changes to the application problems that Eureka/EngageNY might've made after July of 2016.
