Use this smartboard file to teach your students about hearing onset and rime in words. Start with the concept that words all have a beginning sounds. Progress to identifying the beginning sound in single syllable words. Each picture includes elkonin boxes so students can tap out the sounds they hear in the words. Next roll a consonant dice to practice blending onset and rime. Finish by changing the onset to create a new word.
I teach this lesson in first grade in October after I know they know all their letter sounds, how to segment and hear each sound, and after syllables. In the standards it is listed under kindergarten. Depending on readiness it could be taught in either grade. Throughout the year, as you teach new blends and digraphs, it is a concept you can keep revisiting. It also can be taught as a precursor or in conjunction with word families.
