I have taught first grade for many years. Aside from a little magic, it seems that first graders learn to read--and WANT to learn to read--by reading and rereading favorite books. What I’ve done is taken six first grade favorites, and created student “books” using six to nine pages where the students create their own adaptation of the literature through a copy change activity.

I teach approximately one book per week, and have the children read around the table. Once they hear the pattern, sometimes they “read” by looking up in the air! So I continue to monitor and have them practice reading habits, such as tracking words with a finger, pointing to capital letters, periods, etc. I have the students work in small group rotations, and they read the book once each day of the week, and write one page of their adaptation story each day. I also include time for the children to illustrate their stories, further solidifying their memory of the adaptation and the words they chose. At the end of the week, or at the beginning of the next week, the children read their completed adaptations to partners or small groups. The children then take their books home and read them to their families.

There are six book adaptations here. They are in a zip file. I’ve included these books as Word docs so you can use and adapt for yourself. I realize formatting sometimes shifts when different users open Word docs, and I can email you a PDF of these if that is easier for you. I made a guess that you’d like to adapt them, as desired. If feedback indicates otherwise, I’ll gladly upload PDFs.

Here I’ve outlined my main targets for each book. Every one of these book adaptations encourages children to spell and write high-interest words, which is very motivating. High-interest words are especially motivating for the reluctant readers and the ones who get “bored” by phonic stories. I always use these literature books along with a sight word system, and a phonics program.
