First Grade Reading Workshop Lesson
Core Curriculum aligned
I use these papers to teach students why an author has written a book:
Entertain, persuade or teach
I discuss the story of the 3 little pigs with students and then read them the book "The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs" by Jon Scieszka.
We discuss why the book was written: The wolf wanted to tell his side of the story- that he is not a big bad wolf. Hence the purpose of this book is persuasive. Then go through other books and review the purpose of those books. Elephant and Piggie is to entertain, a non-fiction book about the sun is to teach etc. Have students complete the "True Story of the 3 Little Pigs" worksheet at their desk. Then have them independently read a book from their reading workshop "book baggie" and do the next worksheet independently.
