This set of science centres has been designed specifically to go alongside my First Grade Science: Examining Australian Habitats unit.
8 fun and engaging science centres to review understandings of Australian habitats and animals, pieces to print and laminate, and matching activity sheets where relevant. All you need to add are some STEM materials, counters, spinners, and optionally small plastic animal figures and magnifying glasses.
Scientific skills: diagram drawing, labelling diagrams, and using scientific language
Who Am I? - Students work in pairs or groups to play. One student chooses an animal card and describes the animal’s features to the group. The other students guess the animal being described.
Label It! - Students use the animal feature word wall cards to label their chosen Australian animal.
All About Animals! - Students work independently or in groups to create a can, have, are chart using the cards provided. Four different animals are included, each set with different colour borders for no mix-ups.
Write About It! - Students choose an animal activity sheet and write all about it. Students can fill in the animal’s habitat in the background of the picture. Optionally add non-fiction texts about each animal for the students to refer to.
Diagram It! - Students choose an Australian animal and draw a scientific diagram of it. For extra fun, add a set of magnifying glasses and small animal figurines for students to observe.
Sort It! - Students sort the animal cards into the habitats in which they live. Three animals are included for each of the five Australian habitats.
Spin and Cover - Students work independently or in pairs to play. Students spin the spinner and cover a matching animal or feature found in the habitat. Continue playing until all animals and features are covered.
Build It! - Students choose an animal and use STEM materials (play dough, pop sticks, paper, plastic and cardboard containers etc.) to build it. Students draw a picture of their final product on the recording sheet.
