Special Note: The New Social Studies standards are heavy on Inquiry-Based skills. The lessons in this curriculum are designed to put the learning in the hands of the students while the teacher is the facilitator.


The lesson is designed using the Backward Design curriculum model.

-this is a student document that is specific to the unit

FYI-Lesson 1 contains a Smart Board slide and the following lesson specific items.
o Suggested Teacher Reads: suggested books teacher can read to go along with the topic (Other similar books can be substituted if you don’t have the suggested ones.)

o Suggestions/Insight into Facilitation: each lesson gives suggested techniques on moving to a lesson format that is student-led and facilitated by the teacher (You will need to provide your students with the appropriate amount of scaffolding, if necessary.)

o Teacher Vocabulary Cards: for a word wall

o Possible Questions

o I Can Statement

o Lesson Tasks: each lesson has a task aligned to the standard(s) for the lesson

o Daily Graphic Organizer: it helps with the student inquiry process and handling of information gained from sources
