Nonsense Words are the key to reading achievement! The focus of this product is to have fun playing BINGO while mastering new letter sounds with nonsense words. Throughout my 30-year career in K-5 education, I have experienced the most helpful practice that can be done in reading is to consistently use Nonsense Words when a new sound is introduced. It verifies if students are sight word readers (memorizers) or if they have truly learned the sounds of letters.
This “Nonsense Word” Bingo set is aligned with Unit 4 of Journeys (2014 Edition). However, it is effective for all first graders as the reading goals are similar. Second graders can even benefit from this product.
Included in this product are:
Nonsense Words Info: Why they are Important and a Parent Explanation
50 Bingo Nonsense Word squares (to cut out to use for calling words)
25 colored Bingo cards (same set in black/white)
Each card has a different word arrangement. The “nonsense words” will continue to be based on the reading skills (vowels, vowel teams, digraphs, blends, etc.) for this unit’s lessons.
Make sure you check out my freebie from Unit 1, which includes the word squares and six bingo cards to try out in a small group setting!
