Launch your first grade writing workshop with these writing lessons, printable posters and materials, assessments, and rubrics! This unit has everything you need to get your first graders started on writing at the beginning of the school year, even if their writing abilities are limited.

This 3-4 week unit begins by teaching your first grade students the routines and procedures of writing workshop. You'll review drawing / writing basics with your students. You'll also get guidance in doing simple narrative, informational, and opinion writing assessments to better understand your students' writing abilities at the beginning of the school year.

In this first grade writing unit, students will learn:

- The routines and procedures of writing workshop

- The basics of planning a story

- Different spelling strategies

- The stages in the writing process

- Basic revising strategies, including how to add more details

- Editing strategies

- How to share work with a partner and how to revise/edit with a partner
