This activity was made when I was teaching The Scarlet Letter to my class. Since the book is rather long and difficult to understand, I felt like taking a day for this assignment half way through would give the students a necessary break from the difficult text.
This is a two part activity. The first part is to create a Name Poem for any of the characters that we have met so far in the story. In the directions I created one for Hester's daughter Pearl, however, I encouraged my students to try to pick a character that not many other students had picked. By creating this poem, students will show their ability to analyze specific characters.
The second part of this activity, is for the students to simple draw their favorite scene so far in the book. Also, they must provide a short paragraph describing what scene they had drawn. I made sure to make it clear in the directions that they won't be graded on their drawing ability (which really cut down on the "But I can't draw" comments) .
