Supporting First Nations/ Native American Literature and Legends in the Classroom
The Rough-Face Girl,
written by Rafe Martin and illustrated by David Shannon, explores First Nations’, (Native American) Literature with reading strategies such as visualization, connection, questioning, predicting and summarizing.
Easy to use reading response pages have been created for each lesson; as well as student evaluation and teacher assessment rubrics for each page.
Included is a First Nations’ Legends Passport, lined and interlined versions, with an assessment rubric. The passport can be used to record each legend the students read. It can be done as a class, or separately as an independent reading log to support your First Nations focus.
Other First Nations Legend units available are:
Hiawatha and the Peacemaker
Storm Boy and Frog Girl
The First Beaver
The Boy Who Lived With Seals
*This unit is the same unit as the Native American Legends - Rough Face Girl. The title has been changed to accommodate Canadian search words.*
To obtain a copy of this book and others like it, I recommend checking out Strong Nations,
