Product Description
This First Nations and Europeans in New France and Early Canada Part 4: The Fur Trade resource helps support students as they continue learning about this time period in Canadian history. This resource was created for French Immersion classes; lesson plans are written in English, while all student texts and tasks are written in French. (Please note that the cost of this unit is slightly higher than the English version due to the cost of translation.)

While Part 1 of the full bundle unit focused on the First Nations groups themselves, Part 2 involved learning about the explorers and early contact between Europeans and First Nations groups, and Part 3 concentrated on the social, political, economic and religious aspects of the colony of New France, Part 4 introduces students to the early years of the fur trade. (Part 5 is a culminating event that immerses students in "The Great Fur Fair of Montreal.)

Students are introduced to two essential questions early in this unit, and each student will choose one question on which to focus his or her learning. To show what they have learned, students will choose from a set of Challenge Investigations to find those activities which speak best to their strengths.

Topics covered include:
• Fur Trade Relationships
• Struggle for the Fur Trade
• Baymen vs. Voyageurs
• The Great Peace of Montreal
• Contemporary First Nations Issues

While this unit has been created to support the inquiry-based Grade 5 First Nations and Europeans in New France and Early Canada strand from the 2013 Ontario Ministry of Education Social Studies Curriculum, it is recognized that many Grade 5 classes may not have sufficient age-appropriate print resources for student use. This product includes a age-appropriate notes containing background information for the teacher that may also be used as grade-appropriate supplementary information for the students themselves.

As of July 26, 2016, all 5 parts of the First Nations and Europeans in New France and Early Canada series are available:
• Part One: Before the Explorers
• Part Two: Explorers and Early Contact
• Part Three: New France
• Part Four: The Fur Trade

All FIVE parts of the full unit are also available as a translated, discounted bundle, which you can check out here: First Nations and Europeans in New France & Early Canada FRENCH BUNDLE
