PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

This cross curricular unit was designed with activities across the primary curriculum. Its highly visual, easy to reproduce activities, keep students actively engaged and on task meeting the needs of all learners. The appealing layout allows ample space for young students to record information and ideas. Finished products look great and can be used for learning portfolios or displayed on a bulletin board allowing your students to share their success.

Animal Research Report Unit Includes:
• A How-To for teachers with Extension Activities and other Lesson Ideas
• Glossary of Terms
• Animal Research Information Gathering Graphic Organizer (2 pages)
• Animal Research Booklet (9 pages including blank title page and blank lined page)
• Animal Research Booklet Evaluation Rubric (for teachers)
• Student Self-Assessment Page
• Animal Report & Creative Writing Pages (5 pages for use with optional suggested writing activities)
• 2 Animal Word Search Pages (with answer keys)
• Similarities and Differences Among Various Types of Animals Chart (for use as an extension for enhanced learners, or a whole class culminating activity)

The Research Booklet is the main focus of the unit and forms the basis for all of the other suggested activities. Students first complete the Graphic Organizer to acquaint themselves with their resources so they know what information is in their reference book and where to find it. Not all information that is required will be gathered on the graphic organizer but it is a useful task for students to learn how to take jot notes and find information quickly.

The Research Booklet is comprised of a number of different worksheets. Students will need to research items such as: Animal Category, Where it lives, Habitat, Food, Predators, Survival Techniques, Interesting Facts, Appearance, Lifecycle, and Sustainability and Stewardship. You may choose to do all or only some of the worksheets.

Suggestions and worksheets are included for other activities that build off of this initial animal research. The 9 page booklet allows students to expand upon the work they have already completed on the graphic organizer. They will still need to refer to their reference book so it is a good idea to have them handy. I encourage students to answer in complete sentences using a capital letter and period. More space is provided for that purpose but students working at a lower level can still write single words or phrases. Teachers may scribe for students if they have difficulty writing. Boxes are provided for diagrams in certain sections.

I have not numbered the pages of the booklet as teachers may want to vary the order or length of the booklet depending on the time or variations in curriculum or the needs of the individual student. There is also a blank sheet for students to complete a title page or cover for their Animal Research Booklet. For special education students and those on modified programs, you may only want to include the basic sheets in their booklet. This is an easy way to modify the program if you are reducing and simplifying expectations.

For the advanced learners and gifted students, you may want to include a few more sheets that promote higher order thinking such as the Stewardship and Sustainability. I have included a blank line sheet in the package if students need more space or they decide to include additional information or answer an inquiry based question. Advanced learners may also be assigned one of the extension activities listed below to challenge them further.

Metacognition is playing an increasing role in education today. The Self-Assessment allows students to think about their thinking and allows them to get to know themselves better as learners.
