Description
Thanks so much for looking at this FREE product. My sister teaches Kindergarten and asked me to make a word problem booklet without too many words. She wanted her struggling students to feel successful while solving these with little or no help after modeling them, of course.
I call them FIRST STEPS because I truly believe these are a perfect intro to word
problems for Kindergartners or First Graders. Introduce and practice the phrases,
“How many in all? How many altogether? and How many are left?” and chances are good that little ones will be able to work independently on these booklets.
✿✿✿ FREEBIE First Steps Story Problems (Farm Theme) ✿✿✿
I have included SIX BOOKLETS in each set below. Two addition to 10, two subtraction within 10, and two mixed problems. The second one in each set is the same booklet but offers a number line to use. Great for differentiation! For those ready to use/show the jumps, give them the second book for a challenge.
The books have two pages on each page so you just need to run them, cut in half and staple. Saves paper this way.
✿Addition and Subtraction Books: Cover, 6 problems, 1 blank page where kids (or you!) can make up an additional problem to solve or to trade with a friend to solve. This additional page is great for differentiation.
✿Mixed Book: Cover, six problems (3 addition and 3 subtraction.) This can be used for practice OR for an assessment.
TIP: We never allow our students to draw actual pictures of what’s being counted.
Rather we use circles or an X to represent pictures. I tell them it’s not about the art!

✿ First Steps Story Problems (Thanksgiving Theme)
✿ First Steps Story Problems (Gingerbread Theme)
✿ First Steps Story Problems (Hanukkah Theme)
The books have two pages on each page so you just need to make collated copies,
cut in half and staple. So easy!
Addition Books: Cover, 6 problems, 1 blank page where kids (or you!)
can make up an additional problem to solve or to trade with a friend to solve. This
additional page is great for differentiation.
I have a series of these in my store. To locate them, you can click on First Steps: Word Problems on the sidebar. I’ll be adding to the collection with the themes that are incorporated into many Kindergarten programs.
Once introduced, these can be used during Daily 3, as Do-Nows, in Sub Tubs,
homework (if given!), etc.
Each of the above also has the same booklet with a number line added. You get
SIX booklets in all.
