Introduce word problems to kindergarteners and first graders with ‘First Steps Story Problems.’ When you introduce and practice the phrases “How many in all? How many altogether? and How many are left?” there is a good chance that little ones will be able to work independently on these booklets. Each set includes six booklets: two addition to 10, two subtraction within 10, and two mixed problems. The second one in each set is the same booklet but offers a number line to use, which is great for differentiation. For those ready to use and show the jumps, give them the second book for a challenge.
About this resource
My sister (a kindergarten teacher) and I (1st grade teacher) needed story/word problem booklets without too many words. She wanted her kindergarten students and I wanted my struggling students to feel successful while solving these with little or no help after modeling them, of course. I created First Steps to help our students (and yours!) achieve this goal.
This resource includes:
✿Addition and Subtraction Books: Cover, 6 problems, 1 blank page where kids (or you!) can make up an additional problem to solve or to trade with a friend to solve. This additional page is great for differentiation.
✿Mixed Book: Cover, six problems (3 addition and 3 subtraction.) This can be used for practice OR for an assessment.
✿The books have two pages on each page so you just need to run them, cut in half and staple, which saves paper.
TIP: We never allow our students to draw actual pictures of what’s being counted. Instead, we use circles or an X to represent pictures. I tell them it’s not about the art!
