This lesson by The Write Way is designed to introduce the first three steps in the writing process for informational/explanatory text. Through explicit, direct instruction facilitated by a powerpoint with suggestions for teaching the lesson, students will learn to analyze a prompt, gather ideas through prewriting, organize ideas prior to drafting, and write a first draft of a paragraph. The focus of the writing is birth order and its possible impact on personality. After reading an article, students are guided in the process of writing a paragraph. I designed this lesson for use with high school intervention students whose writing skills were Basic or below. However, I believe it can also be used in middle school. My students found the topic engaging and produced well-organized and elaborated compositions.
