The First Strokes Advanced Snail Tails Workbooks were developed to help students generalize handwriting to smaller ruled paper. The Snail Tails program teaches a style with tails on letters, but is vertical and not slanted. Letters are categorized by their “First Stroke”. Cognitive cues are given for each letter using the First Stroke terminology. If a student can achieve drawing the first stroke of a letter correctly, then sequencing of the remainder of the letter formation is usually correct. Handwriting legibility tips, and reversal strategies are also presented for each letter. The Advanced Print Snail Tails workbooks are developmentally appropriate from the middle of Kindergarten and above. It is recommended that the instructor purchase a copy of the First Strokes Multi-sensory Instructors Manual. The workbook can be used without an instructors manual, but the manual gives multi-sensory instruction for how to make the program progress from large, to medium motor to small motor (workbook) activities. Students should be able to write the letter in the air, and in giant handwriting lines, before doing the workbook. After a student completes a letter page in the workbook, then it is recommended that the student work on the letter within handwriting paper.
