This classic version of the First / Then Board is a fantastic visual aid for students who need to learn to slow down and take one thing at a time. I call this kind of visual support a "Now and Next Board," and for students who struggle with impulse control, generalized anxiety or ADHD symptoms, the Now and Next Board can be a comforting guide.
The setup for helping your student(s) understand their use of this board is simple: When there are 3-4 minutes away from the busy rhythms of class work, explain to the child that this going to help them know what to pay attention to *right now.* Tell them that when they need a little extra help in knowing what to focus on, this board will give them a job to do now, and then something to look at for what's coming up. As long as they can follow (and finish) what the board is indicating on the left side, they can then move on to what is listed on the right side. And then the cycle continues.. always providing a task to serve as the current stimulant for progressing forward throughout their school day. This visual aid can also be associated with incentives for patiently working through each item.
Hot tip - Easy to laminate, keep on a clipboard and then use with a reusable or dry erase marker for repeated tasks in a sequence!
