This activity revolves around the book "If the World Were a Village" by David J Smith. The book discusses topics such as how many people live on each continent, how many people suffer from hunger, don't have sanitation, access to water etc. The last question I address is how many people speak which languages. This is a nice way to get students thinking about the world outside of the US.
I begin by reading the first page of the book (not included with this product). This is optional and not required for the successful implementation of this activity.
Students work in groups with poster paper and answer each question on the PowerPoint. Students share out their answers after each question. Then I present the answers and ask students to compare their answers to the correct ones. I might ask each group to share one difference/similarity they had per question. Finally, I have students complete an exit ticket during which they reflect on which were the most surprising answers and why.
