I plan to use these activities during the first week of school.
Page 2: Getting to know you student scavenger hunt.
Pages 3-4: Content based word search puzzles. I would use the word search to have discussion of topics students may or may not be familiar with. Could also search as pre-assessment. Each word search includes an area for students to write what they know about each word.
Pages 5-6: Mad Libs. Helps teacher confirm student knowledge of parts of speech and subject/verb agreement.
Page 7: Name That Shape: Pre-Assess student knowledge of shape identification. Will also help students get familiar with their new classroom.
Page 8: Classroom Rules: Address government SS standards by having students create their own classroom rules. Also helps students improve their argumentative skills by providing reasons for their rules.
Page 9: Job Application: Great way to get to know students and improve their reflective skills. I encourage students to really think about themselves and characteristics that will help them decide on what classroom job they want. Parent signature serves as a "reference."
Page 10: Teacher Expectation. Last year I took more of an interest in what my students actually wanted out of school. This was a great way to enhance the classroom environment and assignments. The sky is the limit!
