As a high school English teacher, I always ask my students to introduce themselves to me (in writing) during that first week of school. It's a sneaky diagnostic that allows me to get a sense of their writing abilities (both strengths and weaknesses), their personalities, goals, etc. It took me forever to think of something other than asking them to write a letter of introduction; however, one day as I was baking cookies, I thought of this one. It's been tried and tested with a few classes now, and I've been amazed by the results! The student recipes have been honest, thoughtful, and reflective, and I've learned so much more about them than I ever did from reading forced letters. Creative writing is always so much better!
